Thorin Sketch

As you may have seen in my last entry, I’m trying to get back to art.

Last time, I drew Bifur (and I still need to finish him). I used a more relaxed and cartoony style.

This time, I decided to add a little more detail in this sketch. It’s also a bit small, about 6 inches from top to bottom. I hope to enlarge it, transfer it, and work in some more detail and fix things while inking with a brush.

Sadly, the scanner we have isn’t compatible with our computers, so I’m still using photographs to share online. I really need to just get one — it’s so hard to do things like that when there are so many things I should upgrade or get. Isn’t that how it always is, though?

I would like to color it on my iPad or computer, but we’ll see if I’m able to get a scanner sometime in the near future. Regardless, I’m tired of having to rely on photographs to capture the detail.

At some point, I would also like to consider setting up a better way to display my art for sharing. I have a Flickr account, and I love how easy it is to share to places like Twitter and Tumblr (oh yeah — by the way, I’m on Tumblr now). I’m just not sure if I want to put my art on Flickr. I’m considering Deviantart, but I get so tired of signing up for new accounts. Anyone have any suggestions or even reviews of using Deviantart or Flickr to host things like fan art?

Anyway, here is the photograph of my Thorin sketch. I can’t wait to feel more comfortable again, work out my system, and finish the things I’ve started. Regardless, I’m having such fun drawing the dwarves! 🙂

My small sketch of Thorin. I plan to eventually enlarge it and work a few more details in while inking it with a brush.

About Cynthia Griffith

I have way too many interests and hobbies, and continually cycle through them -- paying attention to some, while others wait for when I can get around to them again. My main interests are sewing and costuming (I enjoy historical clothing, such as 18th and 19th century, as well as fantasy costumes like elves and hopefully someday even dwarves), as well as getting back to art by drawing fan art of Thorin Oakenshield and Company. My husband Christopher and I spend a lot of time together, enjoying the outdoors and shared hobbies such as juggling. This blog and website is my way to share what I'm up to with friends and family.

  1. I love the weight of this pose and everything else about it. You know I love seeing the blue lines, and I love this style. Your ability to go cartoony, comic-booky, and realistic always floors me. Glad to see you back to drawing; hope you can get a nice setup that works for you so you keep going as much as you’d like!

DeviantArt is an amazing community for fan art and original art. It’s not just visual art. There are costumers and cosplayers and photographers and writers. Lovely place!

Here’s some other Thorin fan art over there to tempt you:

  3. @Christopher: You’ve always been incredibly supportive of me. Thank you so much! 🙂

@Resa: Thank you for the reply! All the Thorin & Co. art on DA is one of the reasons I’ve been considering using it. I finally made a profile, but I may wait until I have a scanner before adding art. I have a lot of old art from other things and fandoms, but I may stick to costuming (thanks for reminding me about that!) and dwarves for that account. Best Wishes!
