Cloaked Thorin in the Rain Drawing

I actually finished this one last week….

I’ve posted several things in the past, in my Scraps and on my blog explaining this piece…

You can see the original blue pencil sketch here: cfgriffith.deviantart.com/art/…
You can see the 2nd section’s sketch here: cfgriffith.deviantart.com/art/…
You can see a little of my process here: www.cfgriffith.com/2015/02/27/…

The final piece is drawn on 11×14 Bristol (transferred with lightbox, using blue pencil… some tiny detailed sections were lightly drawn in 2H pencil so I could see them better). Inked using Winsor & Newton series 7 brushes (sizes #2, & #3) with Higgins Black Magic Ink. Also small details and straight lines inked using Micron (#’s 08 & 03) and Faber-Castell (size M?) waterproof ink pens. Also final details and effects done with black (and some) white pencils, as well as Dr. Ph Martin’s Bombay India Ink.

Whew! I admit, I didn’t continuously work on this one, so it would have been finished quicker if I’d focused better and wasn’t as distracted. Hubby and I LOVED Thorin stomping around muddy Bree in DoS… so I just had to! :)

Edited to add: I was so rushed to get this online, I didn’t realize I wasn’t paying tons of attention to the scan and balancing the light/dark. You can see a photo of a closeup of his face here on my FB Page in the comments….  www.facebook.com/CFGriffithPro…

I also decided to play around with a very rough sketch for another drawing…

I was planning to do anything but art today. I’m also planning on starting an entirely different sketch Monday. So, of COURSE with my ever-growing In-Progress Pile, I just had to add to it. :P

This popped into my head today. Sketched in blue pencil on 11×14 drawing paper. Poor Thorin, frantically looking around Erebor’s great treasure for the Arkenstone. Playing with shapes and angles (ignoring details and not really caring too much about anything except basic layout and flow because I’m lazy), trying to make sense of the maze that is Erebor. Honestly, I think drawing all that treasure would be easier than drawing all that architecture… oof.

Hoping to get back to this soon and ink it. Just…. I need to stay focused and stop being so easily distracted!

About Cynthia Griffith

I have way too many interests and hobbies, and continually cycle through them -- paying attention to some, while others wait for when I can get around to them again. My main interests are sewing and costuming (I enjoy historical clothing, such as 18th and 19th century, as well as fantasy costumes like elves and hopefully someday even dwarves), as well as getting back to art by drawing fan art of Thorin Oakenshield and Company. My husband Christopher and I spend a lot of time together, enjoying the outdoors and shared hobbies such as juggling. This blog and website is my way to share what I'm up to with friends and family.
